Custom field separation and length

Asked by: michael 625 views API / Integration

Hi

Is there any length restriction for custom fields? I couldn’t find anything in the documentation.

I want to target ads in a forum. For this I use the forum names in a custom field. At the moment I do it this way:

customfield1=forum_name1-forum_name2

In the reports the forums are not separated because AdvertPro doesn’t recognizes the “-” separator. Which separator should I use?

When I use a long chain of forums they appear in the reports as:

forum_name1-forum_name2-for…

Does AdvertPro cut the custom field after a certain length?

Thanks & Cheers,

Michael

    Internet Explorer has a URL length limit of 2048 characters, so the sum of the lengths of all of your parameter names and values need to be less than that.

    Also, the “Data” field where you can enter targeted values in AdvertPRO can contain a maximum of 65,536 characters.

    There is no separator. Why are you passing in names of multiple forums together though? You should only be passing in the name of the forum that’s currently being viewed. If it’s contained in the list of targeted forums defined in the campaign, it will match.

    Does AdvertPro cut the custom field after a certain length?

    Yes, only the first 48 characters will be shown in the reports.

    I’m not targeting on currently viewed forum only I also target on subscribed forums.

    If a user views a forum which we are not targeting on we would like to show him ads for his subscribed forums:

    customfield1=forum_viewed-subscribed_forum1-subscribed_forum2…

    The targeting for this should work at the moment as long we don’t hit any browser URL length restrictions.

    I would like to have the forums also separated in the reports. Is there any way to do this?

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Ahh, ok, that makes sense. I can see how a separator would be useful in this case. Will have to add this to our list of features suggestions for further research.

    Not with the custom fields. You might consider using keyword targeting instead. With that you can pass in a list of values separated by commas and they will be split up in the reports the way you want.

    Thanks for this. This would be a really useful feature for me and I guess for other users as well.

    You are right. I will use keywords instead of the custom fields. This should work the way I need it. It still would be good to get the custom field separator as a feature.

    Thanks,

    I’m running the keyword targeting now for more than 20 hours. When I look at the keyword reports for yesterday I always get:
The requested report could not be generated because no data was available.
I use the following URL extension
?zid=14&pid=0&custom3=123&keywords=forum1%2Cforum2%2Cforum3&random='+Math.floor(89999999*Math.random()+10000...
Is there a delay for the report data or is something wrong with my setup?

    Cheers,

    Michael

    Yes, there can be up to a one minute delay. However, by default logging of custom field and keyword data is not enabled. You need to go to Settings > Expert > Statistics and check all of the boxes for Keywords — there are several of them at various detail levels. Save your changes and after that you should start seeing data pouring into the reports.
