Ad Views vs Log Files

Asked by: redbob 651 views User Questions

In March my log files show pageviews of approx 3.5 million while adviews are only approx 1 million. All pages have multiple ads of various sizes and shapes including text (6 on every page). This seems like a high discrepancy. Any clues?

Thanks
Bob

Do you have enough ads running to fill that inventory? I’d take a look at the inventory reports to see if you’re serving a lot of default ads. If you have no default campaigns set up in your text ad zones then unserved impressions for those will not show up in any reports, but for banner zones there is always a default since each banner size has a default to fall back on if the zone doesn’t have one.

Every banner campaign has a “bonus” component which does not limit ad views. I did it this way so that when the view limits are reached, the bonus views kick in rather than the default banners. The text ads do not have view limits either.

Well, there are other things that can cause discrepancy.

Are you filtering out hits from search engine spiders and other web robots from your log file? Those can add up to quite a lot. The ad server filters out hits from those.

Some visitors have ad blocking software, so page views from those visitors will not generate impressions.

Make sure you are filtering supporting files from your logs, such as CSS, GIF, JPG, etc… files since those are not actual page views.

Also, your logs may include page views which were actually errors such as 404 not found and those should also be filtered.
