Flash click tracking

Asked by: michael 578 views User Questions

Hi Mike,

We created a manual for our advertisers to make sure that they set up their flash ads so, that we are able to track their clicks. Basically I copied the section from the AdvertPro manual. Unfortunately the click tracking for non of the ads worked so far. I double checked the manual and couldn’t find any mistakes.

We send them this code:

<br />For clicks on your ads to register in our system an invisible / transparent click layer button needs to be added on the topmost layer of the flash file. Depending on which Flash version is used, please attach this relevant command to the button:<br /><br />Flash 4, 5, 6, and 7:<br />on (release) {<br />  if (clickTAG.substr(0,5) == “http:”) {<br />    getURL(clickTAG, “_top”);<br />  }<br />}<br />Flash 8 and 9:<br />on (release) {<br />  if (_root.clickTAG.substr(0,5) == “http:”) {<br />    getURL(_root.clickTAG, “_top”);<br />  }<br />}<br />

I also checked that the “ClickTAG Parameter” is set up the right way. (Uppercase/Lowercase). Is there any other thing we could have done wrong?

Thanks,

Michael

    One thing I notice from the code you posted is it has curly quotes around “http:” and “_top” but they should be straight quotes like “http://” and “_top” to make the code valid.

    That probably happened if you wrote the document with a Microsoft Office application as it likes to stylize the quotes — very annoying when working with code as it breaks the code.

    If that’s not the problem, then the Flash designer hasn’t set up the button action correctly or with the exact code you provided… I can take a look at one of the .swf files you have to verify this if you want to e-mail them to support.

    I don’t think that this is the issue. The flash programmers should be smart enough to use the right type of quotes. I guess if they use the wrong quotes the Actionscript won’t even compile. I attached on of the .swf files where click tracking doesn’t work.

    Thanks for your help.

    I am not sure how Flash would handle those quotes when compiling, but if they just copy and pasted the code it’s easily overlooked.

    The Flash banner you attached contains a button named {inv_btn} but it has no ActionScript code defined or attached to the button.

    Thanks a lot. I will get back to the advertisers with this.
