Referrer targeting

Asked by: Sprout 547 views User Questions

Hello.

I’m not sure what the referrer targeting is all about. When you go to the referrer targeting for a campaign you have two boxes, one for targeting and one for blocking.

If I wanted to use this what would I but in those boxes? Can someone help me with this and outline what exactly referrer targeting is all about and how it works?

I’ve tried to look around for something written on these forums or in other support places, but so far have not had any luck.

Thanks :)

Have you tried clicking on the (?) icon above the Blocked Referrers and Targeted Referrers boxes? That is where the documentation is located for those fields.

What the referrer actually is in the context of the ad server is the URL of the page on your site where the ad is being displayed.

    Targeted
Here you can enter referrers to be targeted. Multiple referrers can be targeted by entering one referrer per line. Wildcards such as “http://www.google.*” may be used to match “http://www.google.com”, “http://www.google.ca”, “http://www.google.co.uk”, etc… Additionally, partial referrers may be entered, such as “http://www.cnn.com/” to match all referrers that start with “http://www.cnn.com/” — this works because referrers are matched from left to right.

    Blocked
Here you can enter referrers to be blocked. Multiple referrers can be blocked by entering one referrer per line.

Normally you will either target some referrer(s) or block some referrer(s) from displaying the ads, but not both. It’s useful in cases where a zone is used on many pages. Say you want the ad to only show up on a few of those pages or you want to block it from certain pages, that’s when you would use it.

Also, note that the algorithm used to match referrers is case insensitive and allows for partial left to right matches. This means that “http://www.MyCoolSite.com/” will match “http://www.mycoolsite.com/” and “http://www.mycoolsite.com/” will match “http://www.mycoolsite.com/news.html”, “http://www.mycoolsite.com/search.html”, and “http://www.mycoolsite.com/forum.html” because they all start with the referrer “http://www.mycoolsite.com/”.
