Referer in google analytics

Asked by: Thomas Hvitstein 850 views User Questions

When somebody clicks on an advertisement on a website what will the referer be in google analytics? The domain of the website where the ad is displayed (example: mysite.com) or the domain of the adserver (example: advertpro.adserver.com)? If the website is the answer I suppose this have to be resolved by using googles utm tags?

If you are using JavaScript tags the referrer should always be the web site. With <IFRAME> tags the referrer can sometimes become the ad server. It depends on if the visitor is using JavaScript or not, but for the most part you should primarily see the web site as the referrer.
